Mrs. Mattie (Aunt Matt) Warren Claunch Steele, 88, of Celeste, a life-long resident of the Hickory Creek community and Celeste died at 9:00 AM Wednesday, May 17, 1967, in a Bonham hospital following an illness of several months.
Services were at 2:30 PM Thursday, May 18, 1967, in the Celeste Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Reisor, pastor, and the Rev. Bob Layman officiating. Mrs. Steele was born on September 17, 1878, at Hickory Creek, the daughter of Isaiah Simms Warren and Sarah Elizabeth Taylor Warren. She was married to Homer Claunch, who preceded her in death. Her second husband, Henry Steele, two sons, and a daughter, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Steele had made her home in Celeste with her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Lem Warren the past few years. Mrs. Steele is survived by a son, James Claunch of Denison; a stepdaughter, Kate McKnight of Wichita Falls; a brother, Lem Warren of Celeste; eight grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were Harold Armstrong, Albert Granberry, Herman Compton, Jacque Bickham, Howard Nix, and B. V. Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Mack Pierson, C. E. Brewer, E. H. Blankenship, S. R. Granberry, Byrd Glasscoe, and Preston Lake.
