He initially went to work for Dallas Power and Light Company and then, after marrying Lillian he moved to Houston where he went to work for United Gas Pipeline Company in their metering department where he rose to a supervisory management position. After United Gas reorganized their management in 1948, he found himself unemployed. However, he found a similar job with Michigan-Wisconsin Natural Gas Company in Detroit where he worked in their metering department from 1950 to 1959. In order to be closer to his daughter who had just married and lived in Dallas, he transfered to Head of Gas Production in his companies Guymon, OK gas field and moved to Woodward, OK.
During his years of employment in the gas business, JB invested for his retirement by buying farm and ranch land near Branchville where he was in partnership with his brother-in-law Roy Yates. As JB neared retirement, this ranch property was divided with JB owning 400 acres.
In 1965, after his son-in-law took a teaching job in the Electrical Enginnering Department at Texas A&M, JB applied for early retirement and moved to Hearne, Robertson County, Texas just 18 miles north of his daughters home in Bryan. In his retirement, he devoted himself in a cattle breeding operation on his Milam County ranch, developing a cross-breed of Herford, Angus and Bramah production cows. In 1977 he had to sell off his herd after brucellosis was discovered. At that time he was 76 years of age and he decided to retire from active ranching. In 1982 he and Lillian sold their home in Hearne and moved into their private quarters with their daughter and son-in-law in Plano.
In 1984, his wife Lillian had a light stroke and he spent much of his time the next year looking after her, even though his own health was failing rapidly. In June of 1985, he likely had a light stroke himself. Although not affecting his movement, his mental state changed overnight and he required 24 hour nursing care until he died that October. He had been diagnosed with Avian TB in 1983 and his official cause of death was lung disease.
