Walker B. Adams was one of eight children born to Nathan Burr Adams and Anna Eliza (Brisco) Adams. He married Abbie Jennie Quinby.

He was a prominent businessman and opened a general store, Adams & Son, that also served as a post office (where he was deputy postmaster) and ticket station. The store was located in Bedford Station, which is now Bedford Hills, NY.

His life was cut short August 20, 1896, from a gunshot wound received during a botched robbery attempt of his store.

He and his son, William B Adams, went to the store, armed, after a burglar alarm linked to the store rang in the Adams home. They exchanged gunfire with three burglars, killing two, and injuring the third. Although William was shot from behind, he was saved when the bullet deflected off a buckle on his suspenders and merely grazed his skin.

The loss of Walker was felt deep and wide in Westchester County, with approximately 1,000 people attending his funeral, the largest the town of Bedford had seen to that point.

The town subsequently erected a granite watering trough to commemorate the bravery of Walker B and William B Adams.
