They were also the parents of Adelaide D. Shorb Tiernan, Nina Shorb, Campbell Shorb, Daniel Shorb and Maria Louisa Shorb.

On June 4, 1867 as J. De Barth Shorb, he married Maria J. Wilson at San Gabriel, California.
They were the parents of Maria Inez Shorb White Buck, James DeBarth Shorb Jr., Margaret Nina Shorb, Edith Octavia Shorb Steele, Ramona Yorba Shorb Murtagh, Benito Wilson Shorb, Joseph Campbell Shorb, Ethel Rebecca Shorb, Donald McMeal Shorb, Norbert Newlands Shorb and Bernardo Yorba Shorb.

He is credited with establishing the towns of San Marino and Alhambra. He had control of thousands of acres in southern California, orchards, wineries and cattle herds. He was the first to use pipe to move water from one place to another for irrigation and designed the system that supplies San Gabriel with water. He died on April 16, 1896.
