Lewis ADAMS was born 11 May 1785 in Jefferson Co., KY (KY)134, and died 04 Apr 1864 in Champaign Co., OH135. He married (2) Susannah Melinda REED on 01 Jan 1816 in Urbana, Champaign, OH136, daughter of Francis "Frank" RENO.

Lewis was born in 1785 to Sibbah, who was a slave of William Adams. They were located in "Old Virginny", Jefferson County. Upon Statehood for Kentucky (1792) this area became Shelby County, KY and later it became a part of Oldham County, KY. There is some question as to who Lewis' father may have been and until we have more substantial documentation paternity will not be disclosed at this point. However, it has been reported in Oral Family History that the slave owning family could not keep their "son", Lewis around the other slaves because of his "disposition" and thereby freed him and sent him to Ohio.
Lewis was manumitted (freed) in 1813 at the age of 28 and migrated to an area near Muddy Creek in Champaign County, Ohio. Here he met and married Susannah Ried, daughter of Rachel Magee/McKee Reno and step-daughter of Francis Reno on 1 Jan 1816. Lewis appears on the 1820 Federal Census for Champaign County, Ohio as a Free Person of Color (FPOC) Head of Household. Manumission Papers for Lewis were filed in Shelbyville, Shelby County, KY on the 15th of March 1813 and in accordance with the "Black Codes" of Ohio he registered at the Champaign County Probate Court in Urbana, Ohio as a "Free Person of Colour" upon his arrival in Ohio.
It appears that Lewis and Susan were very family and community oriented as they were charter members of the St. Paul AME church (1824) in Urbana, Ohio. They purchased 200 acres of farmland in Concord Township, Champaign County, Ohio in 1829. Lewis was a Trustee for the "Select School for Colored Children" (1842) operated by the Church. He is also listed as an agent for the Abolitionist Paper "Palladium of Liberty" (1842-1845), in addition he is listed by Prof. Wilbur H. Siebert in his work "Mysteries of the Ohio Underground Railroad" for his activity as a Conductor on the UGRR. (information researched by my cousin, Art Thomas, Springfield, Ohio.)
