Martha Belle French, whose maiden name was Sassaman, was born near Boyertown, Berks County, PA, December 6, 1815. She died near Alum Rock February 24, 1910, aged 94 years, 2 months and 18 days. The deceased was united in marriage with Samuel French October 28, 1832. To them were born ten children, four daughters and six sons. The husband died in 1865 and five of the children have also preceded their mother in death, namely, Jane E. French, Mrs. Mary Neely, Edwin, James M. and Calvin J. French. The following survive: Mrs. Anna Laughner, Mariasville; Mrs. Catherine Carpenter, Carnegie; Wm. H., Cranberry; Samuel G. and John O., of Alum Rock. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. French moved with her family from Berks County to Clarion County about 1834 and lived on the farm where she died for the past 64 years. In early life she united with the church and throughout her long life remained a faithful follower of Christ. At the time of her death she was the oldest member of St. Peter's Reformed Church, St. Petersburg. She was most consistent in her relation to her church. Since 1901, on account of the infirmities of her age she received the ministrations of the church in her home. The funeral services were held on Saturday morning February 26. Burial was made in the cemetery at St. Petersburg where also an appropriate service was held in the Reformed Church conducted by her pastor, Rev. A.C. Renoll.
