Mary Naomi Barber Hamilton, 91, of Lexington, died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at her home after a lengthy illness.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Lexington followed by interment at the Lexington City Cemetery.

The family will have visitation from 6 to 8 Saturday evening at Davidson Funeral Home.

She was born Sept. 7, 1920, in Salisbury to Thomas D and Mary Ethel Barber. She graduated in 1937 as valedictorian of her class at Boyden High School in Salisbury. On Aug. 21, 1938, she was united in marriage to the Rev. John R. Hamilton, and they began a ministry together in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church for 41 years, serving 10 churches. Upon retirement, they settled in Lexington and were active at First United Methodist Church as well as the community. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Cara M. Hamilton of Raleigh, NC.

She is survived by three children, John R. Hamilton Jr. and his wife, Mary Ann Hamilton, of Lynn, Anne Hamilton Terry and her husband, James J. Terry, of Colleyville Texas, and Susan Hamilton McCarl and her husband, retired Col. James M. McCarl, of Burke, Va.; seven grandchildren, Sean Hamilton of Lexington, Melissa Fuhrman of Norwalk, Iowa, James J. Terry III of Richmond, Va., Kirstie Hamilton Anderson of Denton, Matthew McCarl of Alexandria, Va., Mary Beth Wise of Fairfax, Va., and John R. Hamilton III of Asheville; and seven great-grandchildren.
