Mary Melvina Hicks was the daughter of Oliver G. Hix and Mary Fry. Mary Fry died soon after the birth of her daughter. Mary Melvina was reared by grandparents in Jackson County, Tennessee. She had six half-siblings.

She married John Lawrence Nichols in 1881 in Clay County, Tennessee. Mary and John moved to Texas after the birth of six of their eight children. They eventually settled in Elk City, Oklahoma. Their children were:
