Gertrude was born April 15, 1921 in Auburn, New York to the late Raymond (Riziero) and Mary Sangiacomo. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Rudy and Mary Sangiacomo and her brother Anthony Sangiacomo.

She graduated from the Auburn Memorial School of Nursing and attended Barnard College. February 9, 1943 she married the late John Leroy Clancy, whom she met while both were stationed at Fort Ontario, New York. She was an Army nurse and he was a finance officer. Gertrude served as a nurse in a MASH unit in Normandy, France during WWII. Upon the end of the war, they settled in Elizabeth Lake, Michigan until John returned to the military and resumed his army career. They moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1963. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Marilyn, Jack (Marty), Tom, and Sara (Bob), two grandchildren, Morgan and Gregory (Amme) and two great-grandchildren Vivienne and Henrik and her sister-in-law Gertrude Zampetti Sangiacomo.

Gert loved playing bridge and golf. She was very active in all the Officer's Wives activities at Fort Benjamin Harrison. Gertrude was widely known for her volunteer activities including Crossroads Rehabilitation Center, Fatima Retreat House, St Vincent de Paul Society, WFYI and St Lawrence Catholic Church.
