Maude was born to William and Elizabeth Bass in Kansas. She was the second of six daughters. Before she married her husband Glenn her family was living in Bakersfield, CA where they had a family store. When Maude married Glenn in 1910 she moved to Santa Barbara where they started their new confectionary business at 521 State Street. Remaining open for 40 years, closing the business in 1950. Maude was known for making delicous pies that were sold in their candy store and malt shop. The El Encanto Hotel bought her pies and when guests at the hotel asked if the then Chef Thompson baked the pies the waiters response was "they are handmade Thompson pies", not a lie, but not Chef Thompson at the El Encanto. Glenn and Maude had three children. The first a daughter died at birth. The second child was their son Kenneth and third was their daughter Marie who died in 1942 from the effects of polio.
