Lydia was a daughter of Martha Clark (1813-1855) and Nathan C. Downing (1807-1858), who were both from the Deering and Weare region in southern New Hampshire.

Lydia was born in Weare on 27 January 1844 [N.H. VR].

As a toddler she accompanied her family when they relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, about 1845. She spent the remainder of her childhood there.

Move to Minnesota in 1856 or 1857

Following the death of her mother in Boston in 1855, Lydia accompanied her family on their move from Boston to Houston, Minnesota, by October 1857, when they were enumerated there. Her father died there in 1858, orphaning her at the age of 14.

Lydia married Henry Clay CHASE at Waseca Co., Minnesota on 7 June 1865 [IGI].

Published Chase family genealogies state that Henry was the son of Jacob CHASE (1806-1870) and Mary MORSE ( -1855).

Lydia died at Freedom Township (or Alton), Waseca Co., Minnesota on 9 March 1866 at the age of 22; was buried at Money Creek Cemetery, Houston Co., Minnesota [Downing Family Bible; his Civil War Pension Application 296483].

It is possible that Lydia died in childbirth, although this speculation is based only on the time interval between her marriage and death.

Her widower, Henry, married her younger sister 5 years later.

Lydia and Henry had no issue.
