Robert Jonathan Browning was born in Caswell County, North Carolina. He was the son of Robert (Rev. War Soldier) and Frances Kimbrough. R. J. married Frances W. Biles, the daughter of Stephen Jerome Biles and Martha Walker. The Browning family was living in Giles County, TN in 1850 and in Lincoln County, TN in 1860. R. J. and Frances lost two sons in the War Between the States, Charles H. W. and Samuel W. R.J. moved his family from Lincoln County to Harvest, Madison County, Al about 1866.
