He was born Aug. 9, 1933, in Gaston County, son of the late Earlie O. and Viola Lingberger Atkins.
Mr. Atkins was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
A graveside and interment service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Hollywood Cemetery, Gastonia, officiated by the Rev. Jerry Millwood.
He is survived by: sister, Margie Fayssoux; a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: brother, James E. Atkins; sisters, Ann Atkins Burch, Phyllis Atkins Moore.
