Wesley Naugle McCubbin was born August 25, 1910, to parents Luther and Sallie McCubbin. He was the 3rd child of Luther, and the first child of Sallie. He grew up in Beckham County, Oklahoma, in the Poarch township that eventually became part of Carter, OK.
Wes graduated from Highway School with his younger sister, Esther Lee, in 1930. After graduation he made a trip to California to visit his cousins and to see that part of the world. He worked various odds and ends jobs while in California, all the while sending letters with farming instructions home to his parents who for years had already been farmers.
Wes returned from California trip in 1931. He went back home to help with the family farm. On Dec 28, 1934, Wes married Linnie Lee Hopkins, daughter of T.J. Hopkins and Gertrude Anna Nichols Hopkins, in Anadarko, Caddo County, OK, just before returning to California to attend Hemphill Diesel Engineering School. On March 11, 1935, Wes and Linnie's daughter, Naoma Lee McCubbin, was born.
Wesley stayed in California through 1938. He returned to Beckham County in time to be counted on the 1940 census that April. On August 24, 1940, he married Dorothy Phelps, the youngest child of Adolphus "Dolphy" Phelps and Laura Webb Phelps. On May 28, 1941, Wes and Dorothy's daughter Melba Sue McCubbin (Street) was born.
Wes and Dorothy took over the family farm before the death of his father, Luther. Wes won Presidential awards for his practices in conservation farming, soil preservation, and other techniques being taught at the time in hopes to avoid another Dust Bowl. On his farm Wes raised wheat, cotton, cattle, and he had a dairy. He was also the one to call with mechanical problems; it was well known that if it had an engine, Wes could fix it.
In 1990 health issues forced the sale of the farm and a move to Sapulpa, OK, near the home of their daughter, Sue. Wes was later diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and his wife, with cancer.
Wesley passed away February 17, 1995. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Dorothy, and his older brother Chester McCubbin, Sr. He was survived by his daughter Sue Street of Sapulpa OK; older sister Maymie (Mary) Swisher of Bethany, OK; younger sister Esther Lee Bills and nephew Bob Bills of Bethany, OK; nephews Chester Jr and Richard McCubbin of OK City; granddaughters Kerri Manuel and Sherry Barrett and their husbands of Sapulpa, OK; and four great-grandchildren of Sapulpa. Wes was also survived by family members he'd not met: daughter Naomi Lee Taylor of Wabash, IN, and her children and grandchildren.
