The Reverend Father Lawrence R. Kern died Dec 23, 2011 at Kenton Manor, Greeley, Colorado. He was born in Fort Collins on Aug 23, 1930 to Harold R and Ida (Spurlock) Kern. He attended schools in Laporte and Eaton, Colorado. He graduated from the Colorado State College of Education in Greeley in 1953 (BA) and attended classes at CSU as well as the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley CA (ND 1960). Before entering the seminary, Lawrence taught High School English in Kansas and Wyoming.

He was ordained to the priesthood Dec. 21, 1960 by the Right Reverend Joseph S. Minnis, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado. He served churches in Clearfield UT, Leadville, Estes Park and Ouray CO. He was pastor St. Gabriel's in Greeley at the time of his death. Father celebrated the Office of Holy Baptism on many occasions. He had 100 baptisms in 2009 and 210 in 2010.

Father Kern was interested in archaeology, traveling extensively in the Southwest USA as well as Mexico. His interest in genealogy resulted in the editing of two books, Ouray County Cemeteries and Delores County Cemeteries.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty (Lois Elizabeth) Watson Alvarez and grand nephew, James Sharp. Survivors include his sister, Barbara Tuttle of Fort Collins; five nieces: Vera Selland (Terry) of Loveland, Rebecca (Argus) Markle of Arkansas, Mary Beth (Bill) Akers of Arkansas, Charlette (James) McCollister of California and Kathleen Tuttle (Greg Golovanoff) of Idaho, and a step nephew, Greg Alvarez (Mary) of CA; great nephews and nieces (Diana Eliason, Mike Sharp, Gayle Sharp; Charles, Jeff, Dwight, Vince, Dana (Jenkins), Jason and Jeanette (Murchinson) Markle; Terri and Lance Akers; Mike and Kim Kinzer; Cassandra (Jeff) Slota, Teresa (Kevin) Roseman, Elizabeth Golovanoff; 36 great grand nieces and nephews (8 step); and numerous great great grand nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 29, at 11:30 am at St. Gabriel's Anglican Church at 1103 10th Ave. in Greeley with a pot lock lunch to follow for family, church members and friends. Memorial donations will go to Habitat for Humanity (Adamson Mortuary, 2000 47th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634).

"Recently we all had an opportunity to meet the Rev. Lawrence Russell Kern, our new Curate. Father Kern is a native of Ft. Collins, Colorado. In 1953 he received his B.A. Degree in Education from Colorado State College, Greeley, Colorado. His Graduate work was done at Colorado State University. Following this in 1957 he entered Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, California from which he received his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1960. Father Kern was ordained in June 1960 to the diaconite of the Episcopal Church, after which he served as Curate at St. John's, Boulder, Colorado."

"In December 1960, he was ordained into the sacred priesthood, in St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Denver, Colorado and was then assigned to the "Timberline" circuit of the Episcopal Church as Vicar of St. George's Church, Leadville, Colorado, he served Grace Church, Buena Vista, St. John's Breckenridge, and Holy Cross, Minturn, Colorado. In this circuit, he covered 4,200 miles each month. He has been Vicar of the Timberline Circuit for four years"
