Antonia Schmidt was born 31 Aug 1872 in Posen, Prussia, the daughter of Carl Friedrich Schmidt, a "kolonist" or farmer/settler, and Wilhelmine Winkelmann. Antonia was the fourth child in a family of one son (Carl Ernst Wilhelm) and five daughters (Alvine, Amelie, Auguste Pauline, Antonie, and Auguste Bertha). The Schmidts lived on the family farm in Gornitz, Posen, Prussia [Gornica, Poland today] until 1892 when they were brought to America by Antonia's brother Wilhelm "William" Schmidt. He had emigrated in 1885 and took up residence in Weston, Wisconsin. Antonia married Theodore H Beste in Wausau, Wisconsin on 24 Dec 1896. He was a widower who had seven children from a previous marriage, six of which were still alive. Antonia took care of all six children. The Beste family lived in the towns of Wausau, Cassel, Weston, Schofield, and finally Rothschild, Wisconsin. Theodore Beste was a saloon-keeper, a hotelier, a worker in the Marathon Paper Mill, and briefly sheriff of Wausau, Wisconsin. The couple had one child of their own, a daughter named Ruth June Beste, who was born in 1910. Theodore died in 1928, and Antonia moved with her daughter and her husband to San Mateo, California. She died of pancreatic cancer on 10 Dec 1951 and was buried at Saint John's Cemetery in San Mateo.
