Obituary for Joseph J. Jenkins. Preston County Journal. Kingwood, WV. Thur., Aug. 15, 1912.
Excerpt -- Joseph J. Jenkins was born at Cheat Neck, Monongalia County, W.Va., Jan. 12, 1823, and died at his home one mile east of Evansville, Preston Co., July 29, 1912; aged 89 years, 6 months and 17 days. He married Permelia Thomas, Oct. 6, 1843. To this union were born eleven children, eight of which are living. There are living, 31 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. The other companion of this home departed this life on Dec. 15, 1899.
In his early life he followed blacksmithing for a living and worked for the B. & O. Railroad during the building of the Kingwood tunnel. In 1864 he bought and moved to the farm on which he lived the remainder of his life. He was always industrious and by good management, he accumulated a good living and always manifested an interest in his neighbor's welfare. He was a member of the M. E. Church for over thirty years. In the death of grandpa Jenkins, his neighbors have lost a true and trusted friend and his children a kind and loving father. The funeral was conducted at the Old Mountain church on Tuesday July 30, at 1 o'clock by Rev. Marcellus Knotts of Grafton, and Rev. H. B. Workman, pastor of the Evansville charge.
