The oldest of 15 children Phyllis married William "Bunk" Boydstun in 1914. Together they had two boys, Karl & William II. She cared for her younger siblings and her paralyzed mother. Her father was a tenant farmer who strongly believed in the socialism of Eugene Debs, so much so, that her youngest brother is named Eugene Debs Burleson.

Phyllis left home at the age of 16 to escape poverty and maintained a close relationship with her two sisters closest to her in age, Pearl and Eunice. After her death, for a short time, her sons lived with her sister Eunice. Bunk retrieved the boys and raised them. He later remarried. Eunice named one of her daughters Viola in honor of Phyllis.
