Funeral services will be Tuesday for R. Alan Atkin, the director of McGhee Tyson Airport for more than 30 years.

Mr. Atkin died Sunday at age 84.

His family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. today at Berry Funeral Home Chapel on Chapman Highway. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery with full military honors.

Mr. Atkin and his wife, Mary Louise, celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary Aug. 2.

"He was a good person," Mrs. Atkin said Sunday. "I liked him and he liked me, and we got along real well."

The couple met while Mr. Atkin, a trumpet player, was performing at the Deane Hill Country Club.

"I heard him play, and I liked his music," she said. "He was just so artistic and intelligent. I just adored him."

Mr. Atkin retired as McGhee Tyson airport manager in 1983. He remained active in the American Association of Airport Executives.

He served in World War II as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Mr. Atkin graduated from Knoxville High School in 1939 and from the University of Tennessee in 1950. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

The couple enjoyed traveling, and Mr. Atkin counted London as one of his favorite sites, his wife said.

Two and a half years ago, Mr. Atkin stepped off a curb at the airport, fell and hit his head, an injury from which he never quite recovered, Mrs. Atkin said.

"It was kind of ironic, but things like that happen," she said.

In addition to Mrs. Atkin, Mr. Atkin is survived by sons Robert and Richard Atkin and daughters Susan Fletcher and Terry Cavett.
