From 1970 to 2001, he owned Dutch Bertges Chevrolet in Dunkirk and also served as its president. He formerly worked as general manager of new trucks for Dailey's Chevrolet in Erie. Entering the military at age 16, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fredonia, N.Y. He enjoyed outdoor activities.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Nantes Bertges; a son, John Bertges; a sister, Joann Schloss; and a brother, Joseph Bertges.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy DeCelio Bertges; a daughter, Karen Kocan and her husband, Jim, of Titusville; three sons, Jerry Bertges and his wife, Marilyn, and Charles Bertges and his wife, Patty, all of Dunkirk, and Tom Bertges and his wife, Patty, of Lakewood; a stepdaughter; a stepson; two brothers, Dan and Richard Bertges of Erie; six grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
