George and his partner, Henry Ahrens, operated a general store in Koeltztown in the 1890's. Elizabeth died in 1902. George and the family moved to Argyle in 1907 and he and his son George Jr. build a large general store there. The mercantile burned losing all inventory on December 11, 1907, including the post office of which George was postmaster. George was Argyle's first postmaster, serving from 1904 until 1914.

The store was rebuilt on the same spot on Second Street. George also owned an icehouse, bracket shop and stave mill. In a published 1915 business census. George Sr. is listed as a miller, having purchased a grain elevator which was later sold to the Farmers Elevator Company.

George died on February 18, 1923 from influenza. His is buried at St. Aloysius Parish Cemetery in Argyle.
