The son of Henry & Mary Ann (Kendig) Souder[s], in 1860, he was a laborer living in Manor Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of twenty-two in Lancaster County November 3, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 8 as a private with Co. E, 178th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). A note in the company register states that he was "discharged having obtained a substitute who was mustered into old reg't." That is false as he honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1863, then later applied for and received a disability pension, which would not have happened had left within days of mustering. He is in the company register with a middle initial of "S."

He married Catherine E. Breneman and fathered Susan (b. 11/10/61 - married Jerome C. Breighner), Emma (b. @1867), Franklin (b. 09/26/69), and Elmer B. (b. 11/22/71). On November 17, 1890, he applied for a disability pension and received it and re-applied for an increase dated February 6, 1908. Cause of his death is listed as "chronic nephritis" and "dropsy."

Note that Catherine's tombstone gives her married surname as "Souder."
