Bobby Gene Holden "Papa Holden," of Center Star, Ala., passed away Dec. 18, 2011, after an extended illness.
Bobby was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Holden Laine Hooper; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clark Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Brant Holden; his father, Preston Holden; three sisters, Charlotte, Martha and Jackie; and a brother, Billy.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Linda Hamm Holden; five daughters, Cathy Burns (Dave Childers), of Center Star, Ala., Susan Hurst (Larry), of Hatton, Ala., Patricia Holden, Charlotte Byrom (Doug), all of Center Star, Ala., and Bobbie Barber (Dan), of Underwood, Ala.; eight grandchildren, Ginny Griffin (David), Tracy Crowell (Jamie), Michael Burns (Tina), Jason Dean (Veronica), Jeff Dean (Dawn), Chris Hooper, Cassie and Ashley Byrom; five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Cory Griffin, Kendall Crowell, Cadence and Laken Dean and Landry Hooper; his mother, Gertrude Hester; and three sisters, Mary, Linda and Shelba. Also, a very special sister-in law, Judy Tidwell, who was always like a daughter to him; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
Bobby was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ and was a member of the body of Christ for more than 65 years. He preached the gospel for more than 50 years in Indiana, Ohio and Colbert and Lauderdale County, Ala. The last 31 years of his ministry was served at Elgin Crossroads Church of Christ in Elgin, Ala.
Along with owning Mama Holdens Restaurant in Elgin, Ala., where he proudly earned the name "Papa Holden," he was a member of the Carpenter's Local and self-employed for many years. His talent with wood can be seen in numerous homes in the area. His love for woodwork showed in the quality cabinets, vanities and various other products he built. He also was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army for several years.
Services for Mr. Holden will be hosted by Elkins East Chapel in Center Star, Ala., with visitation 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Elkins East Chapel, followed by burial at Center Star Cemetery.
Brother David Dowdy and Brother John David Parker will be conducting the services.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Lango, Amedisys Home Health Care and Hospice, and their wonderful employees, Janet, Keith, Claudia, Karen and Kim.
