Mayes proudly served his country with the United States Army during the World War II, where he received a Purple Heart, Bronze Arrowhead, and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Three Bronze Stars. He worked as a mechanic most of his working life then was self-employed. Mayes was a faithful member of the Memorial Heights Baptist Church in Claremore, Oklahoma.

Daughter Joan McCarty, of Pryor, Oklahoma; Grandchildren Jason McCarty and his wife Beverly, of Pryor, Oklahoma, Jeff McCarty and his wife Darla, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma;
Great Grandchildren Kaleb McCarty, Jake McCarty; Sisters Mary Sue Gardner and Billie Ross, both of Claremore, Oklahoma; Brother Gary England, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma;
And a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenny; and sisters, Ethelene and Wilma.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2011, at Mowery Funeral Service, Owasso, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at Memorial Heights Baptist Church, 1500 West Will Rogers Boulevard, Claremore, Oklahoma, with Pastor Paul Simpson and Phil Womack officiating.
Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Arrangements and services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso.
