They were last sighted near Gusap when they were seen to turn left into a cloud bank where mountain peaks were impossible to fly over at his altitude of 5,500', and failed to rejoin the bomber formation.
James was declared "Missing In Action" on this aircraft.
The aircraft was found in 1979 and James's remains were identified in 1980 and he was interred here. Their B-24 crashed near the Kassam Pass, roughly 2-3 km in the jungle on the northern side (Goroka side) of the nearest road.
James' status was changed to having died in the "Line Of Duty".

James also has a "Cenotaph" in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Philippines. The "Rosette" in front of his name here at Manila signifies that his remains were recovered.
