Sarah E. Babcoke was born in Ohio, December 12, 1850, and passed away at her home in Eldon February 23, 1917. She had moved with her parents to Missouri when thirteen years old.

October 10, 1867, she was married to Thomas Cotten. To this union five children were born; four of whom are living, two boys and two girls, all married and doing well.

Mrs. Cotten had not enjoyed good health for many years and the shadow of life found her strength slowly ebbing until the last year or two when she became weaker more rapidly. She was conscious almost to t he very last and passed away peacefully as a babe passing quietly and calmly into sleep.

When quite young she gave her heart to God and had joined the Methodist Episcopal church to which obligation she continued faithful as a Christian until called to join the church of her first born in heaven. Let all emulate her example. She was a faithful mother to her children and they were faithful to her.

Her son Julius did all he could for her comfort and twice took her to St. Louis for special treatment. This proving of little avail he had planned to take her south in hopes that she might be benefitted but she became unable to go.

When in St. Louis Oct. 23, 1916, she said, "Oct. 23, 1863, 53 years ago, my father and mother came from Ohio and stopped at the Planter's Hotel and on the morning train we met Gabe Cotten, who later became my father-in-law. We went on to Jefferson City and Mr. Cotten went on to California from where he shipped stock. A short time later I met my husband, Thomas Cotten."

Many of us can sympathize with the children and friends. We have known mother's love, enjoyed her counsel and sympathy and know how we would have missed them. Let all those who have mothers living do all they can for their comfort and take everything out of the way that would mar their peace or hinder their way to heaven.

The funeral was held at Rocky Mount church. A very large attendance was present to hear the sermon and to show them their love and confidence. The many neighbors and friends had long known Sister Cotten and knew her life.
