She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Frank Bennett (1952) and Eugene Cross (1990), her son Samuel Bennett, son-in-law Jim Riner, granddaughter Tresia Bennett Powley, step-grandson Beau Cross, and her twelve siblings.
She is survived by three children, Eva Gay Meador (Dennis), Kaaren Riner, and Keith Bennett (June); step-sons Darry and Robbie Cross (Mary); daughter-in-law Freida Bennett; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren.
Opal was born in Grandview, West Virginia on September 12, 1918 to Bartley Redden and Mary Ellen Berry Redden. She was the youngest of thirteen children. The family was descendents of the Cherokee Indian tribe.
Opal was the cook at Daniels Elementary School in Daniels, West Virginia. In 1964, she moved to Clarksville, Indiana with her youngest son, Keith. While living there, she worked at King Fish Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky.
In 1967, Opal moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Soon after, she met her husband Gene at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Together, they began a used furniture business which became Cross Tradewinds Auction. In 1978, the two moved to Ft. Myers, Florida where they owned and operated Bonita Fish Market. At age 73, Opal obtained her driver's license for the first time. She lived in Ft. Myers until July 2010 when she moved to Pennsylvania to live with her daughter Kaaren in Hanover, Pennsylvania.
