Helen Chapman was the daughter of Earis and Mary Julia (Carpenter) Shanklin. She grew up on a farm near Bridgeport and graduated highschool there. After graduating Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford with a Bachelor of Science degree, she made a career of teaching elementary grades in several schools in Oklahoma until her retirement. During her college years she was a member of the Wesley Foundation, the Wesley Players, Forenca and Alpha Phi Sigma. She taught for the college as a teacher's trainer. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Helen was married to Raymond Edward Chapman on June 23, 1946 at Bridgeport. To this union were born five children: Judith Ann, Kathryn Lue, Janice Kaye, Richard Raymond and Susan Gayle. After having lived in several towns during their teaching careers, Helen and Raymond made their last home in Lawton, OK.

A memorial service was held for Mrs. Chapman at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Lawton, OK, with Rev. Terry Koehn and Rev. Les Banks officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home of Lawton.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, their children and their spouses, include ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Cleo Fossett, Bonnie Huser, Carolyn Ralston and Phyllis Hale; one brother, Ray Shanklin. She was preceded in death by her parents three brothers and four sisters.
