According to his Washington State death certificate, William was the son of Matthew Bates and Mary Lister. He was a minister.

"William E. Bates Funeral Rites Today, Was Retired Minister

Funeral services for William E. Bates, 87, retired Christian Church minister, who died Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emma Powers of route 2, Kent, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today from the Chittenden chapel. The Reverend George Jacobs of the Kent Christian Church will conduct the rites, with burial in the Kent cemetery.

The Reverend Bates had been a minister in the Christian Church for a period of 52 years, retiring from active preaching in 1920. He was born January 25, 1849, in Scott, Illinois, and resided for a number of years at Marshfield, Missouri. He had been a resident of this community for the past 16 years.

Surviving relatives include two sons, William Bates of El Dorado, Arkansas and Bert Bates of Menominee, Michigan, and one daughter, Mrs. Emma Powers of Kent."
