Ilah was born Ilah Frances Parker on March 25, 1915 to the parents of Edwin Stuart Nebraska Parker and Emma Frances Wemple in Paxton, Nebraska (Both buried in Colorado). Ilah had two sisters, Gladys and Dorothy, and two brothers, Edwin and Winton, all born in Nebraska.

She was born in Paxton, but raised in Arthur, Nebraska and graduated from the local school house in 1932.

On May 1, 1933, Ilah married Raymond Willam Gross, who already had two sons (Richard and Ralph) from a previous marriage (see bio for Raymond William Gross). Over the next 8 1/2 years Ilah gave birth to six (6) more children, Robert Edwin (1935), Doris Darlene (1936), Verna Rae (1936), Walter Clyde (1939), Ilene May (1940) and Donald Lee Gross (1941).

Times were tough (depression, drought & dust bowl) so Ilah and Ray moved to Idaho and tried potato farming in 1937, but that didn't go well because the drought affected Idaho, too. They heard there were jobs in Seattle, so they moved to Seattle, Washington in 1941, where they lived until their deaths. Ray died at the age of 61 of lung cancer on September 21, 1968 (He smoked a pipe and "roll-your-owns." Ilah died at the age of 84 early Christmas morning, 1999.
