He was the son of James Henry Fitts and Frances Moylan Bird. He married Alice J. Bugbee January 29, 1886 Philadelphia, PA. She was the daughter of George Franklin Bugbee & Mary Alice Root.

Henry purchased property from his father and brother in Mecklenburg Co. VA in 1844-46. James Harris Fitts shows his last place of residence as Merry Mount, Warren Co., NC. (James Harris Fitts, Fitts Family, Ft. Orange Press, Tuscaloosa, AL)

1836-1840 Deed from James Burney to Henry Green Fitts for 3 Negro slaves for $1,400, names: Mariah, Emerly, and children Ann and Fillis. (Deed Bk 27, pps 481-482) 1837 deed from Sheriff G. Perry to Henry G. Fitts for $2,448, for six slaves: Boy Lewis, Man Ephrapen, Woman Hannah and three children. (May Court 1839, Bk 27, p. 450) 1840 deed from William Falkener to H. G. Fitts for $700, Negro woman Evernice. (Deed Bk 27, p. 541) NOTE: some of these names appear later in the account book of Henry's son, James.

1840 census of Warren Co. (p. 236) shows Henry G. on the same page as his father, Henry, and brother, Oliver D.: M-5, 3M20-30, F20-30. Slaves: 4M-10, 2M10-24, 4M24-36, M36-55, 4F-10, 4F10-24, 2F24-36, F36-55.

"Virginia Births & Christenings 1584-1917" gives his birth as 11 Sep 1858, Mecklenburg Co., VA. However, his birth is recorded by his father: James Henry Fitts kept a book of events, income & expenses, particularly of slave holdings. Known as the James Fitts Commonplace Book, it is held at the Virginia Historical Society. The following excerpt was transcribed by Alexs P.
