Eldon Earl Bevens passed away after a long illness at the age of 86. He was born March 12, 1925, in the family home near the Levens Street bridge. He lived his entire life in the same block. He was the first child of Homer Dale Bevens and Esther Amelia Anderson Bevens and was joined by siblings Nelda and Stanley. He attended Dallas schools and graduated from Dallas High School in 1943.
While still in high school, he worked for the Polk County Fire Patrol Association taking supplies to lookout stations at Bald Mtn., Fanno Mtn., and Doran Peak. This job included winter supply trips when the lookouts were used as aircraft warning stations during WWII. After graduation, he attended Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City, Utah and Oregon State College.
In 1944, he joined the Army Air Corps and served with the 8th Air Force as a ball turret gunner on the Flying Fortress B-17. He was injured in France and was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal. While recuperating from his injuries in Sious Falls, SD he met Lois Miller. They were married February 7, 1948 and have made their home in Dallas since that time.
Joining his father and grandfather, he began working at the Muir & McDonald Company in 1947 as a laborer. He later became bookkeeper and then purchased the leather tannery from Walter Muir in 1968. He continued to own and operate the business until 2001 when the business was sold to his daughter and her husband, Lisa and Greg Koloen.
He was preceded in death by his younger daughter Lisa Koloen.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lois, daughter Laurie (Chuck) Gee of Pasco, WA, grandson Charley (Kara) Gee of Portland, granddaughters Andrea (Mathew) Conrady of Pasco, and Caitlin (Nick) McCaw of Dallas, great granddaughters Madelyn Conrady and Kodi McCaw, sister Nelda Kingsbury of Corvallis and brother Stanley (June) Bevens of Rio Rancho, NM. Also surviving are two step granddaughters and seven step great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, December 21st at 1:00 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church on Fir Villa Road. Interment with Military Honors will be in the Dallas Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Dec. 20th from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. in Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Memorial Contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Dallas Fire Department in care of Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center.
