Ruth Lee Martin Chilton, age 87, of Bryan Texas, departed this life on Sunday, December 11, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. Private family memorial services were held Friday, December 16, 2011 at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.
Ruth Lee was born to A. Howard and Marion (English) Martin in Heathsville, Virginia on August 14, 1924. Graduating from Birmingham Southern University with a Bachelor of Music in Piano, she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She taught music at various times throughout her life as well as working for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations at Langley Field, Virginia. Ruth Lee married Robert Chilton in Heathsville, Virginia on November 10, 1951 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. They resided in Virginia until 1961 when they relocated to Houston with NASA. They lived in the Clear Lake area during the early years of the space program. She relocated to Bryan after Robert retired from NASA, in 1978. She devoted her life to her family, friends, and home; a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid gardener and a passionate devotee of traditional jazz music.
She leaves behind her husband of 60 years, Bob, and three sons, David Chilton of Bryan, Don and wife Pat of Houston, Larry and wife Lori of Plantersville, as well as seven grandchildren.
