Son of Robert L and Alma Brightwell. He attended LaBelle schools and graduated from Northeast MO State Teachers College in Kirksville. He attended Law school in Kansas City.
On September 21, 1916 He married Harriett B Eads in Chillicothe. They moved to Monticello MO. While there he taught rural schools and served as Probate Judge and Prosecuting Attorney.
In 1934 they moved to Washington, DC where he was an attorney for the Navy.
They then moved back to Chillicothe in 1955. Harriett died on May 10, 1960.
He married Hazel Mae Mansfield on August 5, 1961.
He was a member of AL Mas of Shrine in Washington, DC and Friendship Ledge 89 AF & Am and Order of Eastern Star in Chillicothe.
