Beers was accused of swindling investors in the Ozark Industrial Training School Corporation when he was the head of that Adventist institution (His father-in-law was a Seventh Day Adventist minister). He was shot and murdered by a young man named Arlie E. Grant in retribution.
According to his death certificate he was buried in Mt. Zion cemetery; however, his grave apparently has no headstone.
