World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army in Company B, 135th Infantry, 34th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 23, 1944 near Anzio, Italy in which he single-handedly captured two German machine gun positions, killing seven enemy soldiers and capturing nine, and was severely wounded while attempting to take a third, requiring him to self-amputate his right leg. He was presented the Medal by Major General Sherman Miles at the Boston Commons, Boston, MA on April 13, 1945. After returning home, he died of complications nearly two years after receiving his wounds.
