~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mr. H. C. Battermann, son of John H. and Mariah Battermann, was born in Germany Dec. 24, 1827, and came to America in 1846. After one year spent in New York City he came to Chicago and engaged in the grocery business, which he followed until 1866, when he moved to Palatine and engaged in the lumber and grain trade in company with Joseph Slade. In 1878 he built a flax and feed mill, which he rented until 1882, when he sold his lumber and feed business and operated the feed mill under the firm name of Abelmann & Co. Later this firm consolidated with the firm of Abelmann & Ost (owners of the elevator) under the present name of Battermann, Abelmann & Ost. Henry Battermann, son of H. C. Battermann, has for some time had his father's share in the business.
Mr. H. C. Battermann built the brick block in which he at one time had a store, and was the owner of considerable village property until last Christmas, when he made several of his relatives gifts of his real estate. The failure of the old People's Bank caused him to lose considerable money which belonged to the village and other parties, but by selling property he refunded every cent intrusted [sic] in his care. He was county supervisor four years, a member of the Board of Trustees fifteen years, besides president of the village several terms; also a member of the Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Maennerchor, and although not a member at time of death, was past worshipful master of the A. F. A. M.
Mr. Battermann married Miss Sophia Schuer in 1853. They had 10 children, four of whom are living--Mrs. Louise Abelmann, Mrs. Augusta Hieber, Miss Bertha and Henry. Mrs. Battermann died in 1872. Mr. Battermann was married a second time, in 1877, to Mrs. Droelle, who died Aug. 18, 1901. Deceased had been ailing for some time, but the immediate cause of his death was cancer of the stomach. He passed from this world surrounded by his family Thursday afternoon, July 10, 1902, aged 75 years 6 months 16 days. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the house. He leaves a brother, Mr. Wm. Battermann, of Arlington Heights, besides his four children.
Mr. Battermann has done much for the welfare of our village. He was a practical business man, kind and considerate of all, and a Christian gentleman, whose memory will be held dear by a large circle of friends.
