She and Grandpa Wilson had their tenth (and last) child in 1935, and she was named Violet Margaret. Violet was born with "water on the brain" as it was called. She never learned to walk and used a little walker made for children.
Grandpa Wilson died from an infection in 1937 leaving Granny with ten children to raise. Later that year, the oldest two married. Violet died in 1939.
She later married Samuel David Nalley, and they were the parents of one more child.
Granny was a devout Pentecostal. She wore her hair very long up in a braid on top and no makeup. I remember once getting to brush her very long hair.
She was once again left a widow in 1955 and always struggled to "make ends meet." Her life was wrought with hard times trying to raise children. Her youngest child was the only one to finish high school, and he went on to earn his Ph.D. in nuclear physics.
I never thought of her as having a sense of humor. However, she made an audiotape for her youngest child (about 1981), and I listened to the tape and realized she was an extremely funny person. I wish I had known that when she was living...
She was the mother of 11 children and my maternal grandmother.
