Elizabeth Oakes Phelps, 92, of Jamestown, died Saturday, December 12, 1998, at the Russell County Hospital.

Mrs. Phelps served this community in many ways. She was a retired school teacher, a pioneer in the formation of the county's public library and bookmobile system, and was involved as a business woman in Russell County. She was also a member of the Jamestown Christian Church.

Born in James on January 30, 1906, she was the daughter of Candis Ella Carnes Oakes and James "Pappy" Oakes, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl B. Phelps.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John D. and Judy C. Phelps of Jamestown; one daughter, Jerry Jones of Russell Springs; one grandson, John Carl Phelps; three great grandchildren, Paul Alan Jones, Elizabeth Ann Phelps and Jacob Christian Phelps. One great great grandson, Andrew Jay Jones also survives.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Tuesday at H.E. Pruitt Memory Chapel with Bro. Carroll Egnew and Bro. Tony Stephens officiating. Special music was provided by Kathryn Hamm, soloist, and Helen Brumley, organist.

Active pallbearers were Doug Aaron, Terry Lester, Roger Blankenship, Billy Wooldridge, Gary Oaks and Bill McGruder.

Honorary pallbearers were George McClure, Raymond Brockman, Dean Hadley, Lloyd Krguer, Dr. James Monin and Steve Branscum.

Interment in Phelps Cemetery.
