He enlisted in Company A, 6th Vermont Volunteer Infantry in September, 1864, and served until the close of the war. He participated in seven battles, While in the Battle of Petersburg he was wounded. After his discharge he returned to his home in Vermont . He remained there until the spring of 1866, when he came to Minnesota and settled on his parents place in this township.

He was married on the 25th of December, 1868 to Miss Almira J. Tucker. Their known children are Isabelle, Lydia Ann, Ernest, Walter, Edna Victoria and Arthur Bickford.
