Fred L. Bates, 75 of El Dorado and formerly of Norphlet died Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Courtyard Health & Rehab following a lengthy illness. Born January 21, 1936 in Norphlet, AR he was the son of Gilbert and Eva McCaskill Bates. Mr. Bates was a former employee of MacMillian Oil and later retired from Cross Oil Refinery. He was a past member of the Union County Sheriffs Mounted Patrol, a member of the Norphlet Masonic Lodge and a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U. S. Army. He was a member of the Norphlet United Methodist Church. Preceding him in death along with his parents were, a son, Danon Lee Bates, a brother, G. L. Bates and a sister, Othelda Bates Toombs. Survivors include his wife, Marlene Bates of El Dorado, a son, Todd Lee Bates of Magnolia, two sisters, LaDonna Bates Watts of Norphlet and Arnell Bates Arnold of El Dorado and a sister-in-law, Nelda Bates of Norphlet. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at the Norphlet United Methodist Church with Rev. Zack Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven memorial Gardens under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the church.
