In 1865, the the couple and four children- Charity, Albert, Burton, and Wilbur- lived in a frame house in Jasper. Jonathan worked as a farmer.
They moved to Long Lake, Grand Traverse County, Michigan between 1865 and 1866. Soon they were joined by Philinda's sister Harriet Bessey Fillmore and her family. The first township meeting at Long Lake was held at the Schanck house on 1 April 1867. In 1870, the Schanck's farm was worth $800 and their personal possessions $400. He was elected Clerk of Long Lake township in April 1871. Jonathan received a land patent for 155 acres of land in section 9 of Long Lake township on 10 February 1873. In April 1872, Jonathan was elected township Supervisor. He was again elected Supervisor of Long Lake township in April 1873. After attending the first meeting he received $3.96 for mileage from the Board of Supervisors.
Jonathan died on 2 October 1873 in Long Lake from kidney disease. In his will, which was dated 4 October 1873 [two days after the date on his death record] Jonathan left everything to Philinda with the estate to be divided between his two sons Albert and Burton after her death. James L. Conner, Benjamin H. Durga, and Ira Chase witnessed the will. It is curious that he did not provide for his daughter Charity and sons Daniel and Wilbur, especially since all three appear to have had mental problems. Jonathan's estate was admitted to probate in November 1873.
Philinda died on 1 August 1877 at Long Lake from dropsey.
They are probably buried in the Linwood Cemetery in Long Lake. There is no marker in the cemetery and their burial is not listed in cemetery records. One possibility is that they were buried on their farm.
