Mervin Richard Ottemann was born January 11, 1920 in Nemaha County to Edwin and Mary (Gobber) Ottemann. He was one of four children born to this union. Mervin was baptized Feb. 22, 1920 and confirmed Sept. 16, 1934 at Martin Luther Church by Rev. Wm. Fruehling. Mervin received his education through the eighth grade at District 43 Center School. He helped on the family farm until April 29, 1942 when he entered the U.S. Army with overseas duty. Mervin was honorably discharged on Nov. 20, 1945. He was a member of the Tracy-Bates American Legion Post #370 of Elk Creek.

Mervin married Lila Bohling on February 28, 1946 at Martin Luther Church by Rev. Wm. Fruehling. They made their home 5 miles northeast of Elk Creek. This marriage was blessed with 3 children, Kenneth, Sharon and Joyce. Mervin was a lifelong member of Martin Luther Church where he held many offices on the church board and served on the cemetery committee. Mervin was a hard worker and loved all aspects of farming and raised cattle, hogs, sheep and chickens. He was very conservation minded and also served on the Johnson County Soil Conservation Committee. He passed away on December 14, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his wife, Lila, of 65 years, of rural Elk Creek, son, Kenneth Ottemann and wife Annette of Johnson, daughters, Sharon Kuti and husband John of Fort Calhoun and Joyce Badertscher and husband Roger of Tecumseh, 9 grandchildren, Tony and Jane Badertscher of Holdrege, Brad and Leah Badertscher of South Bend, IN, Mark and Tami Badertscher of Tecumseh, Jeff and Danelle Ottemann of Lincoln, Andrea and Paul Hibma of Fort Collins, CO, Brian and Kendra Kuti of Muscat, Oman, Michelle and Brian Frahm of Plainview, Heather and Shane Hoffman of Newnan, GA and Matt and Brittany Kuti of Fort Collins, CO, 14 great-grandchildren, sisters, Elsie Knippelmeyer of Tecumseh and Iona Koehler and husband Wilber of Humboldt and brother, Arnold Ottemann and wife Laura of Johnson and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mervin was preceded in death by his parents, nephew, LeRoy Ottemann, brothers-in-law, Henry Mandery and Julius Knippelmeyer and parents-in-law, Carl and Augusta Bohling.

Funeral services will be held at the Martin Luther Church, rural Johnson, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. Visitation will be at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may go to the family's choice. Interment will be in the church cemetery with full military honors.
