Alfred was the son and only child of Alfred Ernst and Maria (Albrecht) Reuter. With his parents he moved to London, and then immigrated to Canada, living in Sperling, B.C. before they immigrated to Washington State in 1923. Alfred's father worked as a grocer and Alfred helped him in the business, becoming a postmaster in the area. In Manchester,Washington Alfred met Aasta Didricksen, a customer of their grocery store. They married and they had one daughter, Dorothy.
