Ex-Health Chief Dr. Poling Dies

Dr. James B. Poling, 79, of 730 W. Market St., former city health commissioner 32 years and one of Lima's oldest practicing physicians, died at 12:35 a.m. Thursday in Lima St. Rita's Hospital.

Dr. Poling has been ill in his home a week and was admitted to the hospital only a few hours before his death. He had been suffering from a heart ailment.

He was born in Amanda Township, Allen County, and had been a lifelong resident of this community. He received his education in Lima Public schools, Lima College and received his medical education at the University of Cincinnati.

He began practice in Youngstown and remained there only a short time, coming to Lima in 1904. He was appointed city health commissioner in 1920 during the administration of Mayor F. A. Burkhardt, and remained in this post until retiring in 1952.

He was a member of the Ohio State Medical Assn. and in 1954 was one of three Lima and Allen County physicians who received 50-year pins and plaques in the medical profession. They also received "Certificates of Distinction," all of which were given by the Allen County Academy of Medicine.

In World War I he served as a lieutenant in the Medical Department of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion; American Ordnance Assn., YMCA and Market Street Presbyterian Church.

He also was a member of the following Masonic orders: Garrett Wykoff Lodge No. 585, F&AM, Lima Chapter No. 49, Royal Arch Masons; Lima Council No. 20, Royal and Select Masters and Shawnee Commandery No. 14, Knights Templar.

His wife, Katharine Deyell Poling, died Aug. 17, 1954. Surviving are a son, James W., New York City; three sisters, Mrs. Minta Kesler, 839 W. Wayne St.; Mrs. Bertha Cheek, Alhambra, Calif., Mrs. Elizabeth Roush, Springfield and two brothers, Clare of Denver, Colo. and Brice, Toledo.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Davis-Miller & Son Cathedral Chapel. Rev. Dr. W. Wood Duff will officiate and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
