Dean Allsman is the father of Chris (living), Ben (living) and Sydney (deceased) with whom he is interred.

Dean was the son of Willie Edward Allsman and Hazel Marie Linn Allsman. Dean and his 2 brothers, Robert Lynn, the eldest, & Gerald Francis, the youngest, were born in the house his dad & granddad built in Longdale OK. He earned BS's in geology & biology at Phillips University in Enid, studied law at the University of Oklahoma (PKA), and, after a stint in the oilfields of Southern Louisiana as a geologist, spent his career in college textbook publishing. He loved education, he loved books, and he loved what books meant.

A Christopher Morley quote was on his office wall for years – "When you sell a man a book you don't sell just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue - you sell him a whole new life. Love and friendship and humour and ships at sea by night - there's all heaven and earth in a book, a real book." No one knew better what that meant than he.

His wife left the family in 1970 taking their youngest, a daughter, Sydney, with her and he raised his 2 sons by himself until he gained custody of Sydney, too. No one was going to destroy his family if he could prevent it.

He did *all legally in his power* to wrest Sydney from her mother, who furtively took her several states away against court order and neglected her from age 5 to age 8. Dean showed far more than the normal ration of moral, emotional, and financial endurance in doing so, persevering through every hardship, sparing no effort, with the inevitable triumph. Sydney preceded him in death, aged 14 yrs. Her death devastated him.

A mentor and surrogate father to many, a ready and enthusiastic neighbor, always working with his hands and wood or concrete, undeterred by fear in various tasks and endeavors, he was a man of wide-ranging interests and competencies, warm knowing humor, and sterling character who, out of quiet conviction, *always did the right thing regardless of the consequences for himself personally or professionally*. From a lifelong desire to do right he was born to swim against the current. Widely known in his industry and amongst his neighbors for his conscientiousness, it was not in him to be otherwise.

In many respects like the main character in his favorite movie, 'Cool Hand Luke', Dean Allsman was a natural-born world-shaker.

A long time smoker, cancer took him. He is sorely missed by his colleagues, friends, neighbors, and family.

His life of quiet probity was a manly example to all.

Rest in Peace, Dad.
