Langley, SC - Mr. James "Red" Rowland, 84, beloved husband of 59 years to Carolyn Smith Rowland and son of the late Thomas and Clara Poole Rowland, died Apr. 23, 2010. Born in Keysville, GA, he had been an area resident since 1950. A World War II veteran, he proudly served his country in the US Navy. He retired from DuPont after 30 years of service where he was an accountant. Prior to his health declining, he was a very active member of Langley First Baptist Church, where he was a former youth Sunday school teacher, Royal Ambassador worker and was also a Boy Scout leader. Red had formerly been active in youth sports and was coach of the 1973 state runner ups Pony League baseball team. He was a charter member of the Midland Valley Jaycees, past present of the LBC Booster Club and a former clock operator at both LBC. and Midland Valley High Schools. In addition to his wife, family members include children, Beth Overstreet, (Tim) Bath, SC, Mike Rowland, (Diane) Clearwater, SC and Tommy Rowland, New Ellenton, SC; grandchildren Jonathan Overstreet, Megan Overstreet, Monica Overstreet, Chad Rowland and Andrea House and great-grandchildren, Justin Rowland, Lauren Rowland and Cooper House. A Celebration of Life Service was held Apr. 25, 2010 at Hatcher Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Pastor Ken Garvin officiated. Interment with veterans honors accorded by the US Navy Honor Guard followed in Langley Cemetery. Pallbearers were Iradell Goodwin, Charles Monroe, Doug Silas, Ronnie Bagwell, Gregg Cato and Troy Nobles. Honorary pallbearers were members of the 1973 State Runner Ups Pony League Baseball Team. Memorials may made to the Booster Club at Midland Valley High School.
