Harriet was the daughter of Benjamin and Betsey Collier Moore Doolittle. She was born in the house that Benjamin built in 1813. She married first Frances Harvey Loveland in 1856. They were the parents of Charles Lee, Edward Collier, and Benjamin Walter Loveland. They were divorced after the Civil War was over. Harriet ran a rooming house to support herself and her three small children and eventually married one of her roomers, Henry Allender. They moved to Chicago for many years before they returned to Hartford.
