She was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Gregory, S.D., attended the Gregory schools and graduated in 1934. She loved to participate in the class plays and was the youngest of nine siblings. They have all preceded her in death.
On June 6, 2004, she and her husband, Lambert "Bert" celebrated 65 years of marriage. On June 28, 2004, I took Mom to the first and only family reunion of the Laur family in Yankton, S.D. There were more than 80 family descendants of her brothers and sisters present. As the only remaining sibling, she was the center of attention and loved every moment of it. I also took her to visit her hometown, and we were able to visit the home she grew up in. Helen was 86 and Bert is 90. They moved in their early 20s from South Dakota to Tacoma Park, Md., and later to Silver Spring, Md. They have spent the last few years at the Gull Creek Retirement Community in Berlin, where she participated in many activities, including plays, Bingo and local travel.
She is survived by her husband, Bert; son, Daniel; three grandchildren, Kimberly, Shenandoah and Brian; and four great-grandchildren, Maddison, Noah, Erin and Savannah.
Helen was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. She wished to say "Thank You and Good Bye" to all of her friends, family and relatives.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, at 11 a.m. at Gull Creek Retirement Community. Officiating will be the Rev. Edward Fahey. Interment will be in South Dakota at a future date.
