ONEONTA — Carol W. VanDusen, 67, formerly of 4 Harrison Ave., Oneonta, died on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born in Oneonta on Jan. 19, 1931, the daughter of Benjamin L. and Evelyn (Wilbur) Blowers.

She was married to F. Ward VanDusen on July 3, 1955, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta. Mr. VanDusen died on April 24, 1982.


She graduated from Oneonta High School in 1948, and from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1954. She taught the first grade in the Otego Central School from 1954-1959, at which time she left full-time teaching to be at home with her family and did substitute teaching in many area schools. In 1980, she was employed by the Otsego County Head Start Program under the direction of Mrs. Esther Fink. Mrs. VanDusen was the teacher center director of Center 12 at the Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Oneonta. The Center had two classes of 3- and 4-year-old children and adult staff members as well. She enjoyed working with the children, families and volunteers very much. She stayed with the program until 1987, when she retired.

She was a lifelong area resident and was a 50-year member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Friendly Circle of the Church, which her
mother had started for the younger women of the church.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William J. (Kay) Ward III; a son, David B. VanDusen and his wife, Sandra, all of Oneonta; five grandchildren, W. Jeremiah Ward IV, Kayleigh Frances Ward, Patrick, Kaleb and Jacob VanDusen, all of Oneonta; one sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Nini) Mead of Oneonta; one
nephew, James Mead; one great-nephew, Andrew Mead; a sister-in-law and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Herron of Sauquoit, and their children, Susan Herron and Jill Hartuing; and several cousins.


Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.


There will be no formal calling hours, however, the family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the start of the funeral service.


In lieu of flowers, friends make contributions to the Greater Plains School Library, West End Avenue, Oneonta.


Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.
